Saturday, September 30 is the date for this year’s conference, which will be held at the Calumet Club in Augusta. Dr. Selma Calmes is scheduled for our main speaker. She is Chair of the Dept. of Anesthesiology at UCLA Medical Center and will speak on both anesthesia concerns for polio survivors and understanding and treating types of pain. In our Summer Polio Update, there will be more information on the conference. Regional Support Group: The Southern Maine regional support group continues to meet the last Saturday of each month in the Portland area. Informational Forum: On Tuesday, May 9, there will be an open house during the day for polio survivors and guests at the Majors Mobility store in the Topsham Mall in Topsham, Maine. Representatives from Alpha One, Ride Away and Hanger Prosthetics will be there also to offer information about available loans, insurance coverage and adaptable equipment. Here is an opportunity to try out many types of mobility aids with qualified people present to assist you. Some of our PPSGM Board members will be present to welcome you. Editor’s Comments: With the recent outbreak of polio in a Minnesota Amish community, it reminds us that no one should think that polio is gone, even though the last previous outbreak in the United States was in 1979. This recent outbreak stresses the need to realize that there are groups or individuals we may encounter who have not been immunized against polio. I believe we need to keep people aware of the importance of immunization. We can do this by talking with our health professionals, parents of young children, news media representa |
