Healthy Choices

Are you feeling lonely or troubled about how to manage your chronic health issues, such as those related to polio?  Something new is now being offered that may be of help to you!  Maine’s Office of Elder Services (OES) was awarded a three-year competitive grant from the Administration on Aging last October to build upon current efforts to advance prevention and wellness programs in Maine.  Working with various agencies, OES has implemented some great programs.  One program, Chronic Disease Self-Management Program, is a 2 ½ hour workshop given once a week for six-weeks.

Anyone living with a chronic health condition, such as polio, is welcome, along with family members, friends or caregivers.  By taking part in a “living well” program, attendees will learn helpful ways of coping and managing their health.  These include:  setting do-able goals, working with others, finding support and solutions to problems, making daily tasks easier, working in partnership with your health care team, and relaxing and managing stress.  Sessions are offered throughout the State of Maine.  For locations near you, contact your local hospital, Area Agency on Aging, or PPSGM at the address/phone number on the front of this newsletter.
